1940's Val Lewton poster for a movie that was never made, The Thing on the Doorstep.

There's a video store in Colts Neck, New Jersey, that has a back room filled with unlikely titles. Available for rent are such movies as Stanley Kubrick's "Napoleon," an unlikely collaboration between Ingmar Bergman and the Three Stooges titled "The Third Strawberry," "Four Flies on Green Felt" (a little-seen Muppet movie that's also among the most nihilistic horror movies of the 1970s) and this movie adaption of the H.P. Lovecraft story "The Thing on the Doorstep" from 1942. Production on "The Thing on the Doorstep" began in 1941, with Val Lewton being placed in charge of developing RKO's low-budget horror films. In search of horror stories that could compete with the pricier features made by Universal, Lewton aecured the rights to several stories by the late H.P, Lovecraft. RKO initially wanted French actress Simone Simon, but her untimely (and supicious) death in 1941 meant the lead went to Lola Hayes.

11" x 17" glossy text-weight paper.
