As I watch the various media I loved as a child begin to disappear, my relationship with ephemera has become richer and more emotionally charged. The death of things like comic books and trading cards is not that surprising, I guess, but movie theaters? Where the hell are all of our social spaces going? And why does the future look more and more like a cozy prison cell?
I spent years working as a newspaper reporter and I never got entirely comfortable with the idea that everything I was creating lost 100% of its value the following day. "Yesterday's News" is shorthand for social irrelevance, so all of those words, photos and newspages I spent making ... anyway, I think you get it.
So, my love of ephemera is, to a certain extent, just self-interest. I know what it's like to watch a career be turned into landfill in real time. It feels futile to grapple with this anxiety, so maybe it's time to just express it ... even if my anxiety's chosen form is kind of stupid.
This is a first draft of an idea I've been kicking around for a while now: a digital painting/collage recreating the Nintendo Entertainment System cover art for the Friday the 13th video game.
