Blue Oyster Cult "Don't Fear the Reaper" mashup print with the Stephen King 80's paperback style.
I've been kicking this song down the road for a while, mostly because I couldn't think of any ideas that weren't either jokes or would look at home on the side of a van circa 1978. Last night, minutes before bed, I had an idea ... tie the song to Stephen King's novel "The Stand," which famously used a sample of the lyrics at the start of the story. From there it evolved into something more darkly romantic, in keeping with the theme of the song. For all of the talk of Led Zepplin's "Stairway to Heaven" being one of them most covered songs in rock history, I can't think of a single version of the song NOT by that band. "(Don't Fear) the Reaper" has a version for almost every modern musical genre ... I can't think of another track that has roch, goth, bluegrass, lounge, folk, punk and techno covers, all without ever muddying the intention of the original song. It's an amazing feat, one worthy of much, much more than a million "More Cowbell" jokes. All Hail Blue Oyster Cult!
